Bodhi Tree Concerts is excited to announce auditions for the world  premiere of a new bilingual chamber opera by Anthony Davis:       PANCHO RABBIT AND THE COYOTE.

We are looking for artists to join us in creating a beautiful, unique, and inclusive production, and encourage applicants of all identities, backgrounds, and experiences to audition.

 

Production Details:

  • Title: PANCHO RABBIT AND THE COYOTE

  • Composer/Librettist: Anthony Davis & Allan Havis

  • PERFORMANCE Dates: San Diego: January 17 & 18, 2026 and
    Tijuana: January 31 and February 1, 2026

  • Rehearsals: Music Rehearsals begin December 2025 and Staging Rehearsals begin January 2, 2026.

  • NOTE: Artists must be able to travel to and from San Diego and Tijuana.

  • NOTE: All roles will be paid.

 

Audition:

  • Dates: Sunday, January 26, 2025 - afternoon & evening

  • Monday, January  27, 2025 - late afternoon & evening

  • Location: TBD (Venue will be Central and convenient to trolley and mass transit 

  • Requirements:

    • Singers: Please prepare a 20th/21st Century aria and an aria of your choice. At least one should be in English or Spanish. 

    • Singers: If neither of the selections above are in Spanish, please also prepare 16 bars of any song/aria in Spanish.*

    • We welcome submissions for all voice types

    • Youth Artists: We are seeking young artists starting at age 9 or in the 3rd grade - age 16. Youth Auditions will be Sunday, January 27th at 2pm. We will ask artists to sing together, move together and come prepared to sing a short solo of their choosing.

    • Accompanist: Provided

    • Accessibility: If you require any accommodations or adjustments to participate in the audition, please let us know in advance, and we will do our best to support your needs.

   *Note: The opera is fully bilingual and artists will be singing in both languages.

 

Who Should Apply:

We are committed to creating a collaborative, inclusive, and diverse artistic environment. We invite singers from all cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations to apply. We strongly encourage those who are traditionally underrepresented in classical music to audition.

Keeping with the mission of Bodhi Tree Concerts - local, Southern California and Tijuana based artists will be given preference.

About the Production:

Commissioned by Bodhi Tree Concerts, Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote is composed by Anthony Davis, with a libretto by Allan Havis and Spanish translations by Laura Fuentes. It is based on the children’s book of the same name by award-winning Mexican American author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh, with stage direction by J.Ed Araiza and in collaboration with Opera de Tijuana. The opera will include artists of all ages, and its purpose is to truthfully reflect border  life, the life of migrant workers, and the families who love them.

We will be presenting a dual world premiere -  both in San Diego and Tijuana. The bulk of rehearsals will be in San Diego, starting in December 2025. Tijuana based artists must be able to travel to San Diego (Passport, etc.) and when we move the production, there will be a week of rehearsals and performances in Tijuana. San Diego based artists must be able to travel to Tijuana. (Passport, etc.).
